Our Story

Posted on Updated on

I have had a lot of conversations around the question of, “Why are we here?” The answer to this question wanders in so many different directions. The truth is that we can believe whatever we want to believe. Whether we are here to fulfill a higher purpose, to love each other and be loved, or maybe we’re just here to have fun and not take life too seriously.

This topic of why we are here gets me thinking about the concept of our story. The story that we make up in our heads that gives life meaning. Every day our story is a bit different. At one point we are fixed in our beliefs about how the world works and then something happens and our beliefs change. We awake the next day to a new story, a story that is altered from the day before, but which is the “true” story?

At this point in my life, I’m not sure how much it matters what the true story is, as long as it works. If you are happy believing your life is all about purpose and that’s what brings you joy, then that is the story you should live. If your story says that life is all about loving and being loved, then maybe love is enough.

In the end, could living one story be better than another? Does it matter what the story is at all?

I have often been asked, do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?

I have been trying to distinguish the difference between the voice inside our heads and the voice inside our souls. To me, the voice inside our head is our story, and the voice inside our soul is our unique reason for being.

Our story talks to us every day. It questions us and compares us to everything and everyone else. It makes us feel immensely powerful one moment and then close to insignificant the next. The one thing that continues to amaze me is how our story can change so quickly. How we can go from happy to sad in the blink of an eye, many times with no good explanation why.

I enjoy listening to other people’s stories and continuing to gravitate towards those with a similar construct of my own story. This is because I feel most grounded when amongst those that see the world similar to me. Those who want to find meaning and leave this planet better than we found it, loving with all of our hearts.  My story is to seek those who have shared common purpose, is your story similar to mine?

To a life well lived!
