We arrived yesterday afternoon in Rome after a 2 hour train ride from Naples and I immediately took a picture with my iPhone and posted it on FaceBook. My comment was “We are not in Kansas anymore!” We arrived in a city that is so different than any we have been to so far. There are so many iconic structures to look at beyond every turn. The most amazing part to me is the fact that there are no tall buildings, not a single skyscraper, not a single modern looking building that I can see. The city has maintained its roots in a time when modern architecture is considered cool. Just look at Dubai! But this is not Dubai, or any other city with lots of tall buildings. Even London has a developing skyline of tall buildings, but not Rome.

We got to our AirBnB apartment yesterday afternoon to meet Gabriella, our newest landlord. It turns out that Gabriella works for Ingram Micro here in Rome. Those of you in the IT industry reading this blog will chuckle. For those of you not in the industry, Ingram Micro is the world’s largest IT distributor and a company I have known well for about 15 years. What a small world!

We got settled in at the apartment and Drew got some homework done while we unpacked. We decided that we would head out for dinner around 4 pm and have an early dinner because I had my Success Redefined peer group meeting at 5 pm local time (8 am in San Diego). Little did we know that the #1 recommended restaurant doesn’t open for dinner until 7:30. So, there was a gelato shop right next door that was open. What could be better for dinner than a cup of gelato? I don’t know, but in our family that was the winning ticket. After devouring our gelato we headed to a local grocery store to pick up some real food for dinner. We found a nice one and loaded up for the next few days. We started walking back and passed a “real” meat and cheese shop and decided to stop in there as well. We picked up some amazing salami and mozzarella cheese balls. OMG, they were both amazing!

Very cool little alley ways throughout all of Rome.

I ended up on the peer group call from 5:30 – 9 pm and loved interacting with this amazing group of purpose driven people from half way around the world. After the call Drew and I worked on some geometry until it was time for bed. We had a big day ahead of us today with a walking tour at 9:30 and then a friend of a friend, Paolo, picking us up to show us his city. I will create a separate blog about today’s events.

‘Til next time …..
