Our Purpose
I have been working through my process to take everything that I have learned over the past few years, I guess my whole life’s experiences, to find my purpose in this world. I have been on this journey for a significant period of time and numerous pieces are starting to fall into place. My purpose as a father/husband/son/brother as well as my purpose in helping to make the world a better place. When I left my job at GE over 19 years ago to pursue an entrepreneurs’ journey I never imagined where it would take me, but I can’t imagine a better life than the one I have right now. At this point I believe that I need to clearly define my purpose which will allow me to make the largest possible impact.
So, I am starting to believe that my purpose for the foreseeable future is:
“To make as significant an impact as possible on the planet before I leave this world”
This purpose incorporates working with Ilise to raise two wonderful children, being a great partner to her, a good son to my parents and brother to Kenny and Abby, but in the end I have this burning need to take the skills and talents that I have developed over my lifetime to make a difference in the world on a larger scale. My journey will take me to Mexico next month to attend the Opportunity Collaboration where I will be meeting with 350 delegates from around the world trying to figure out how to solve world poverty. I have been reviewing all of the bio’s of the delegates and it should be an AMAZING experience.
As for my social responsibility work I have started to realize where I can have the greatest impact. I am a natural connector with a long history in the IT industry. I have started to get introduced to numerous non-profits and social enterprises that are using technology to effect social change. That is where I need to focus my efforts. I am looking forward to gaining more clarity in this area before I put my foot on the gas pedal. Still lots of work to do at 4-Profit so I can’t ignore my main responsibility, but if I focus my efforts in the IT for Social Change arena these two efforts can work hand in hand, could be some great synergies.
One of the main challenges I am struggling with is how to share my passion without overpowering people. I want to be a motivator of people to discover their purpose and follow their passion, but only for those that are interested in that journey. I applaud everyone who is trying to make a difference in the world and I am happy to be joining the bandwagon.
